What are the symptoms of beriberi?


The disorder of beriberi affects the whole nervous system. Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases are caused due to beriberi. Body converts carbohydrates into glucose in the presence of thiamine in the body. The most common symptoms of beriberi are fatigue and lethargy.There are different forms of beriberi. These are infantile beriberi, dry beriberi and wet beriberi. Among all these forms of beriberi, infantile beriberi is caused due to vitamin B1 deficiency in breast feeding mother. In most intense cases, beriberi can lead to death if beriberi treatment is not given properly.

After crossing infancy stage, beriberi disorder shows prominent beriberi symptoms in an affected person. Numb legs, fatigue and appetite loss are the primary symptoms of beriberi. This stage can lead to dry or wet beriberi. The prominent symptom of wet beriberi is fluid accumulation in the whole body. Fluid swelling does not occur in case of dry beriberi. Other symptoms of beriberi include:

  • Cardiac failure
  • Weakening of capillary walls
  • Breathlessness
  • Mood changes
  • Pain in lower limbs
  • Nausea and vomiting
