Sleep is a driving process during which our brain is quite active. It is not obvious so far why our brain needs a peaceful sleep, but it is necessary for the better performance of daily life activities and plans. A normal function of our nervous system can only be possible if our brain is relaxed making our body to function normally, mentally and physically. In short a peaceful sleep is essential for a normal and healthy growth of cells.

Adequate and a good sleep is essential for all children for their development and growth. Sleep problems generally arise with the age if children are suffering from sleep apnea or snoring. Common of them are sleepwalking and sleep terrors.

A test is conducted for sleep disorder called polysomnogram.there are many problems that affect sleep of a person e.g.:

Back pain

Anxiety

Sciatica

Environmental disturbance and noise

Neck pain

Incontinence

Chronobiological disorders

Endocrine imbalance

Use and withdrawal of various drugs

Insomnia is basically a problem of hard time staying asleep, Narcolepsy is a sleep attack in a daytime, Sleep apnea is associated with breathe interruptions while sleeping, and Restless legs syndrome is a prickly or tingling sensation in legs.

TREATMENT PRINCIPLES

Sleep disorder treatments can be classified into four groups as psychotherapeutic treatments, medications, management, rehabilitation and some other somatic sort of treatments. All these cannot be a sufficient medication for a single patient rather a diagnosis is based on a number of other causes as patient’s psychiatric and medical history is taken into account. Somatic treatments and medications are provided for the rapid relief from Insomnia. Narcolepsy is better treated pharmacologically.

70% sleep disorders in children are under-treated. A deviated septum may cause sleep apnea by which 80% of the people are affected.

According to sleep specialists excessive sleep is evident if anyone falls asleep within five minutes.

Waking up and falling asleep is generally controlled by a large number of chemical activities and changes in brain and the blood stream. Any alteration in the balance by food and medication can affect sleep.e.g. Caffeine cause insomnia while alcohol, smoking and antidepressants cause asleep in which there is a loss of REM (rapid eye movement).Use of alcohol and smoking also causes sleeplessness.
